Job Title: Machinist

Department: Machine Shop
Reports to: Business Unit Manager 

Summary: Machine parts to print dimensions using all machining equipment required to complete given jobs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily with minimal supervision.  

  • Read and understand blue prints
  • Use micrometers, calipers and other precision instruments to check parts
  • Perform first article inspection
  • Set up, operate all machines including CNC, manual mills and lathes, and make fixtures to complete work
  • Must follow verbal instructions given by the department manager.
  • Complete secondary operations as needed for required components such as graining parts to achieve the required finishes, using the drill presses and deburring finished parts
  • Notify department manager of quantities ready for outside operations or of any process-generated scrap.
  • Deliver completed components to Quality Control or Warehouse.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: The position does not have supervisory responsibility.

Language Ability Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals in English.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence in English.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Ability Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills This position has no specific requirements for computer use.

Other Skills Ability to use basic hand and machine tools.

While performing the functions of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, climb or balance, stand, walk, stoop and kneel; use hands, reach with hands and arms; communicate clearly and effectively.  The employee is frequently required to lift up to 35 pounds. 

Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties of this position.  

The noise level in the shop environment is usually moderate to loud.

While performing the duties of this position the employee is occasionally required to work in wet or humid conditions, around toxic or caustic chemicals, in outdoor weather conditions, with risk of electric shock, and around vibration.  The employee is also frequently near moving mechanical parts and fumes of airborne particles.  

Education and/or Experience: High School diploma or equivalent; and minimum of 5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
