Manufacturing Automation Engineer

Job Title: Manufacturing Automation Engineer

Reports to: Manufacturing Engineering Manager

Summary:  This individual will plan and design automation solutions for manufacturing processes.  Requires experience in the Lean production principles and tools; capable of analyzing the layout of equipment, workflow, assembly methods and work force to maximize efficiency; and improving production design for manufacturability.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. 

Primary responsibility will be to lead projects in the development and implementation of automation in mechanical assembly, machining and inspection processes.  This will include design, specification, directing and managing vendors, installation and qualification of automated systems and equipment.

  • Develop and implement improvements to existing automation in mechanical assembly, machining and inspection processeso Develop and implement maintenance programs for equipment 
  • Manage equipment purchase and installation
  • Prepare manufacturing documentation
  • Coordinate projects
  • Work closely with internal and external customers and vendors to resolve issues and provide technical support
  • Develop systems and layouts that follow lean manufacturing philosophies of one piece flow and kanban, with emphasis on mistake proofing.
  • Lead and direct meetings with other team members and hourly associates
  • Manage tooling and gauge design and drawings
  • Provide training and guidance to all employee levels in the operation and maintenance of new equipment.

Supervisory Responsibilities This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications 

  • Manufacturing Automation Engineer with 3-5 years experience
  • BS in Engineering or equivalent
  • Lean manufacturing practices ( Kanban, Poke-Yoke, JIT, Value Stream Mapping)
  • Tool and fixture design and GD&T
  • Strong Project Management skills
  • Understanding and functional knowledge of PLC’s, low voltage controls, three phase power distribution, vision systems. Electronic sensors, pneumatics, hydraulics and robotics
  • Machine specification and purchase order writing
  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration capabilities
  • Design and application knowledge of ergonomic and machine safety standards
  • Autocad/Solidworks/MS Office suite
  • Strong Communication skills (written and public speaking)

Reasoning Ability  Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.  Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases.  Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills  Must have working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, internet, email, order processing, inventory, manufacturing, and database software.

Other Skills  Must have excellent communication and organizational skills.

Education and/or Experience   B.S. in Engineering or equivalent.  Manufacturing Automation Engineering from a four year college or university; or 3 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
