Mechanical Design Engineer III Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer III Department: New Product Development (NPD) Reports To: Director of R&DFLSA Status: Exempt Summary: The position will design and develop electric strikes for the access control industry, while performing a supportive role in manufacturing. Requires a working knowledge of SolidWorks and the ability to apply Lean methods to optimize the design process and reduce development time of innovative products to market. Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Required to design, prototype, test, and support the on-going production of electromechanical access control products. Relies on four (4) to six (6) years of mechanical design experience, training and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Requires independent or work with others to provide design solutions that address expressed and implied (through industry knowledge) product requirements. Requires ability to visualize and communicate solutions through design and prototyping. Will be asked to formally report product status and testing results. Will need to apply the appropriate tolerance range on the drawing for any part to ensure it is producible and provides for a reliable, interchangeable assembly. Will need to apply fundamental engineering principles to design challenges while being aware of the implications of cost, schedule and manufacturability of the product. Required to maintain an awareness of changes in the industry and in the development of components that may assist future design activities. Must be familiar and able to apply basic, industry drafting standards and geometric dimensioning and tolerance methods (e.g. ASME Y14.5). Ability to deal with non-verbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables. Computer Skills Must have working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet, e-mail and internet software. Must be proficient in SolidWorks. Other Skills Have the ability to use basic inspection tools including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, dials, and indicators.
